No Fair!

Read Jeremiah 11:1 through 12:17

Philip looked down on those in his church whose faith in God was simple. One elderly lady, Mrs. Miller, especially irritated him. She seemed to think there were no hard questions nor glaring injustices. One day Philip finally challenged her. “If God is so just, why do the wicked prosper?” Mrs. Miller didn’t hesitate at all. “You can be sure that God will eventually judge,” she replied. “It’s not a question of whether, but of when. We may wonder about His timing, but He will take care of every sin.”

These questions are nothing new; the prophet Jeremiah found himself asking God the same things. “I would speak with you about your justice: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease? . . . This is what the Lord says: ‘As for all my wicked neighbors who seize the inheritance I gave my people Israel, I will uproot them from their lands’” (Jeremiah 12:1,14).

Are you jaded or discouraged by the unfairness around you? God is not on vacation. Nothing gets by Him. He will bring all people to account. Perhaps His delay might result in another sinner asking for His mercy.

Challenge for Today: Trust in the Lord when things don’t seem fair.
